IRS free tax filing program launches in 12 pilot states.
The Internal Revenue Service’s new free online tax-filing system (IRS Direct File)—is now open round-the-clock to all eligible taxpayers after a narrower pilot phase that started earlier this year. The pilot program is still only available for residents of 12 states and only covers a limited number of tax situations, but IRS officials say they plan to expand the program in future years.
IRA Direct File is the IRS’s attempt to create a free online alternative to the tax-preparation industry.
The 12 eligible states are Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state and Wyoming.
