How Small Opportunities Can Lead to Success

I know a successful businessman in Maryland who built a large wholesale business.

One day, he told me how his story began.

He came to the United States in 1970. At the time, he did not speak English well and was not sure what kind of work he should do.

Someone suggested that he try selling something at a flea market on the weekends.

The business was simple. He would go to a wholesaler, pick up merchandise, and sell it at the flea market.

Several other Korean immigrants were also selling different products there. Because he was one of the youngest, the older business owners often helped him and gave him advice.

One day, one of them asked him for a favor.

“I can’t make it to the wholesaler today. Since you’re going there, can you pick up my order too?”

He agreed. It was already on his way, so he did not think much about it.

A few weeks later, another person asked him to do the same thing.

Soon, several people were asking him to pick up their orders.

As he began buying larger amounts of merchandise for other sellers, the wholesaler started to see him as a major customer.

That was when he had an idea.

“If I am already handling this much merchandise, why don’t I start my own wholesale business?”

A Small Favor Became a Business Opportunity

What began as a simple favor eventually led to a new business.

Looking back, the story sounds easy.

He started selling at a flea market.

He picked up products for other sellers.

The orders became larger.

Then he opened his own wholesale business.

And, he became successful.

The whole story can be explained in just a few sentences.

But the actual journey was anything but simple.

He told me that he went through many difficult years.

There were things he did not understand. There were times when people treated him unfairly. There were problems that seemed almost impossible to solve.

He also said that luck played an important role.

There were times when he had very little money. There were years when the business did not go the way he hoped. Many times, he thought about giving up.

But he kept going.

He learned from mistakes, solved one problem at a time, and continued moving forward.

Over many years, those small steps eventually led to the successful business he has today.

Consistency Matters More Than It Seems

When we hear stories about successful people, the lessons often sound surprisingly simple.

They are willing to do things that other people do not want to do.

They pay attention to problems people are having.

When they see an opportunity, they act.

And when things become difficult, they do not give up too quickly.

The businessman told me that consistency was one of the most important parts of his success.

Working hard is important, but continuing for a long time may be even more important.

Many people can work hard for a short period.

The harder part is staying with something when the results are slow.

Business Opportunities Often Start With a Problem

Opportunities do not always arrive as big, exciting events.

Sometimes an opportunity begins with a small request.

“Can you pick up my order while you are there?”

Most people might see that as an inconvenience.

But someone with a business mindset may ask different questions.

“Why do people keep asking me to do this?”

“What problem are they having?”

“Could there be a business opportunity here?”

Many businesses begin by solving a simple problem that other people do not want to deal with.

A problem for one person may be an opportunity for another.

Small Actions Can Lead to Unexpected Results

I have also started to believe that consistency can be more important than trying to do everything perfectly.

I write and post articles in Korean on Taxguide.org almost every day.

Writing one article will probably not change anything immediately.

But doing something small everyday can sometimes lead to opportunities we never expected.

For example, Shoutout Atlanta contacted me for an interview. They later published a story about me.

Just Start and Keep Going

When successful people look back on their lives, the beginning often seems very small.

That is why I believe it is sometimes more important to start than to spend too much time worrying about doing everything perfectly.

Keep writing.

Keep posting.

Keep learning.

Keep improving.

And do not give up too quickly.

Many success stories may not begin with one great opportunity.

They may begin with one small action that someone was willing to keep doing for a very long time.
